The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association represents the interests of aquaculturists in Newfoundland & Labrador. It is a member based non-profit organization with a mandate to facilitate and promote commercial development of aquaculture. One of the issues identified under support capacity in the Sustainable Aquaculture Strategy 2014 is the human resource challenges faced by aquaculture operators.
In response to this issue, NAIA commissioned Training Works and MQO Research to develop an Aquaculture Human Resources Plan for the aquaculture industry within the province. The Aquaculture Human Resource Plan is divided into three strategic initiatives which include, an aquaculture Labour Market Analysis, an aquaculture training capacity review, an aquaculture attraction and retention strategy. In collaboration with NAIA, MQO and Training Works developed a comprehensive plan to gather information for the labour market analysis and training capacity review to synthesize into an attraction and retention strategy for industry.
This project included extensive secondary research (e.g., literature reviews, jurisdictional scans, etc.) as well as primary research collected through a series of surveys, key informant interviews, site visits, and focus groups. Topics covered include discussions of the current labour market, anticipated future labour market, other labour market issues, training capacity review issues, etc.
